The political whitewash of Michael Mann, Phil Jones, the Climatic Research Unit (CRU), and the IPCC was stunning. They did not listen to anyone who knew what the accused had done, examined only a few papers carefully selected by the Royal Society, only spoke with the defendants, only considered a fraction of the evidence, and the judges were carefully selected for their prejudice. The sequence begins with identification of an issue. This occurs in several ways, including reporters scanning science journals for articles to sensationalize, or a scientist or environmental group publicizing an issue. If the story catches, they’ll push it from various angles. If it loses traction, they bring in a different scientific angle or raise the level of potential damage.

Why? The obvious answer is because the public was increasingly skeptical as evidence accumulated that the hypothesis was wrong.

All sorts of hysterical predictions were made, including claims this was the start of increasingly severe activity leading to 2012. The only thing that materialized was an extensive and dazzling aurora display.
